I've tried this in KDE4 and GNOME 3.2.1 (12.1 RC1) as well as GNOME 3.2.1 from
factory and the behaviour is identical

I didn't have this issue in 11.4/GNOME nor 11.4+GNOME3, both of which didn't
have hal either so I'm pretty sure we can say that isn't the problem, unless
there is some weirdr regression that has slipped through

Given this is happening consistently in both DE's where should I be looking
next? I'd guess the kernel but dmesg isn't giving me much to go on...
