FWIW, I'm willing to take the GTK3_IM_MODULE patch in our package, but we need to get buy-in from upstream first. Else, we'd add a diverging behavior we'd need to keep for compatibility -- something I want to avoid.

I posted now. (Hrm, gtk-devel-list is a moderated list?) As mentioned, another approach is to implement the proper fallback mechanism. The patch is found in https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=603559 If the upstream takes this, it's fine. We can apply it for both gtk2 and gtk3, change the relevant IM setups. My biggest concern is actually the timeframe.
