usually big filesystem problems are hardware ones. What do smart say (I usually
have a lot of this in the logs, including with good drives)?

don't you have messages.gz archives (on /var/log)?

I never had fsck recover anything :-(, but could it be that it used a recovery
data? If possible, do a ddrescue hard copy to an image and work on the image

I'm curious to know the reason of the problem :-)
