--- Comment #1 from Christopher Yeleighton 2011-07-09 10:36:09 UTC ---
This bug is mostly invalid because my observations regarding the behavior of
fscanf were contaminated.
The information in regex(7) apparently does not apply to scanf. "the same
syntax used in regular expressions" refers to regular expressions discussed in
section 10.3: "Regular Expression Matching". However, chapter 10 does not
define the syntax used in regular expressions, so it is a dead end. Also.
section 10.3 mentions a GNU regular expression handler, meaning that two
syntaxes are possible, but it does not describe the GNU version (i.e. re_exec)
at all, and it does not say that the GNU version is obsolete, leaving the
reader puzzled.
I guess the information in libc.info, 12.14.5: "String Input Conversions" is
incorrect: regular expressions support [:alpha:] islands whereas fscanf does
not.
