Black screen might indicate that power management has kicked in but I don't
want to rule out completely that it is a life lock like in bnc#684634.
Please check if it helps when you add nouveau.noaccel=1 to the boot options.
Please note: this will downgrade the graphics performance of your system
considerably!

Also try if:
xset -dpms (run from without a shell in your X session) makes any difference.

The message: "X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly" comes from kdm
and is due to the fact that the system shuts down all processes when powering
down.
