https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=687996 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=687996#c0 Summary: KDE crashes immediately upon start following zypper update from openSUSE 11.3 to 11.4 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: lub997@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:2.0.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0 After using zypper to update online from openSUSE 11.3 to 11.4, KDE became broken. As soon as I log into it, it shows a progress bar and the openSUSE logo background, just as when openSUSE is starting, but then KDE never appears. Instead, I get a black screen with white text that says "Message from syslogd@linux" over and over and over again. It is not possible for me to copy the full contents of the text that is displayed, because at that point the system freezes, so nothing works to be able to copy anything or take a screenshot. I did notice that one of the many lines that says "Message from syslogd@linux" says "preempt SMP" underneath it. Once this happens and the computer freezes, the "Caps" and "Scroll" lights light up on the keyboard. At that point, there is nothing left to do but hit the power button on the computer case and do a hardware reboot, because the system is completely unresponsive. Upon rebooting, safe-mode has to be used in order to log back into KDE without the system crashing, so that you can then log out of KDE and log back into GNOME (which does work correctly other than Compiz issues), and then you have to reboot again to get out of safe-mode and get back to GNOME in normal mode. KDE does log in and function correctly in safe-mode. I have installed all available automatic updates that have been offered to this date. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Select KDE from the dropdown menu at the bottom of the login screen 2. Click on your username 3. Put in your password 4. Hit the "Enter" key 5. Watch the system freeze 6. Watch the black screen with the white text and the keyboard with flashing lights. Actual Results: The system crashed and I had to do a hardware reboot since the software became completely unresponsive. Expected Results: KDE should have loaded, not frozen. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
