Agree that for most modern machines lp is a waste. But for machines with a
parallel printer, the fact that its not working out of the box is just
terrible. AFAIR the openSUSE target users are not only sysadmins that know
about lp and kernel modules.
Also for most modern machines, lp is not a BIG waste. It's just 20k RAM.
The ideal solution would be to load it only when a parallel printer is present.
For example the YaST printer module might load it before starting detection
and put it in /etc/modules.d when a parallel printer has been defined.
So choose either the easy or the ideal solution, but the end result should be
that parallel printers are working out-of-the-box.
There are many laser printers out there that keep running well for many years
with perfectly good print quality.. that's what I've got. It's way better that
a cheap new inkjet.
