Stefan, I installed the xorg packages from X11/Xorg and removed the
modification to 50-devices.conf.  I am running without any mods to disable 3D
and it is working! -- sort of :)

ksplash still rips and distorts (primarily the lower 1/2 of the ksplash
display), but the normal X display looks good!

FluxGL screensaver actually moves now -- although performance is still a bit
slow. However it is MUCH, MUCH better than disabling 3D.
