I am running OpenSuse 11.4 released version. I am seeing the same issue. I have
done some testing and managed to figure out that I only need to kill the
gnome-screensaver-dialog.

Here is the output of a grep for all the processes with the word screensaver

gpr       2729     1  0 10:21 ?        00:00:00 gnome-screensaver
gpr       6470  2729  0 10:35 ?        00:00:00
/usr/lib/gnome-screensaver/gnome-screensaver-dialog --status-message=
--enable-switch
root      6500  6393  0 10:38 tty1     00:00:00 grep screensaver

I am attaching the strace of the process as it got into the hung state.
The file will be called gnome-screensaver-dialog.strace.1

Just as an FYI
linux-k4j7:~ # rpm -qa | grep screensaver
