People who use a subpixel enabled freetype are reporting that Firefox' font rendering looks perfect now (please note that this is a subjective statement always).
I tried the subpixel enabled freetype stack from opensuse-community.org and it looked much worse than the greyscale antaliasing FF is using now. One example is that straight vertical lines get no aa in the examples I posted before. With the subpixel-enabled libs the same lines are needlessly surrounded by subpixels resulting in more blurring and visible colored borders around the characters.
