ssh uses xauth to retrieve the local cookie. It does something like
'xauth list $DISPLAY'. It keeps the cookie internally, so if you move away the
Xauthority file it still has it stored as long as it runs.
There is the suspicion that xlib uses a different search algorithm to match a
cookie - so here is what you can try when the problem occurs again:
do an
$ xauth list $DISPLAY | xauth -f .Xauthority.new merge --
$ mv .Xautority .Xauthority.old
$ mv .Xautority.old .Xauthority
this way only one cookie (most likely the one stored by ssh) is contained in
this file.
Try starting an X-client. If this fails also, there is an issue with the search
order.
