I have the same (or a similar) issue on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Li1705.
With openSUSE 11.3 I could activate an automatic regulation of the fan with
echo -n 3 > /proc/acpi/fan/FAN/state
(Before I had to fix the DSDT table because the BIOS delivered a buggy one.)
With openSUSE 11.4 the folder /proc/acpi/fan has gone. Due to a kernel patch as
I found out.
I assume the fan should now be controlled via
echo -n 3 > /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device1/cur_state
But cur_state does not change and keeps the value "1" in my case. And that
means: the fan is running with constant (and noisy) speed.
