https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=675773 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=675773#c0 Summary: Subpixel Default setting is uglier than a [insert metaphor here] Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: RC 2 Platform: All OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rdb@ccb.ac.uk QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- With subpixel now enabled in 11.4's freetype without any additional work required, our GNOME default setting of Subpixel Hinting of 'Full' is resulting in some pretty ugly fonts (Screenshot example http://twitpic.com/44ttm3/full) Changing this Subpixel hinting to 'Slight' results in a dramatic improvement in readability. (Screnshot example http://twitpic.com/44u633/full) Given 11.4 does not appear to be pulling in Microsoft TTF fonts like earlier versions (which look better with full hinting) I feel we are likely to have many users complain about the 'poor quality' fonts in 11.4. I think enabling 'Slight' subpixel hinting as default would go a long way to counter that argument. I know this is unlikely to get into 11.4 - but as it is a relatively tiny change for a huge polishing improvement, a man can hope, please? pretty please? I'll be forever indebted to anyone who makes it happen. as a regular contributor to the IRC channels I really don't look forward to all the ugly font complaints.. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
