More information. I did 2 more installs:
* Gnome
* LXDE
The results as previously. Having LXDE installed (and working) I did some tests
using this install:
1. I run full desktop and checked if /dev/disk/by-id/pendrive... is present -->
yes
2. I run the system in runlevel 3 to check if the /dev/disk/by-id/pendrive...
is present --> yes
3. running in full desktop mode I installed meta package (pattern) -- Gnome
4. I rebooted computer and... it failed at boot stage exactly as I described in
the first post
5. the booting process stops because of fsck -- this is the program which
requires the pendrive device
a) it is unclear for me why the device is not present with Gnome
b) I didn't check if fsck is run w/o Gnome installed
6. when booting failed I try to reset computer (it is a cold reset) -- to my
surprise now even BIOS didn't see pendrive and booting was no possible. I had
to turn off computer, wait a second, and turn it on again
Currently I have LXDE+Gnome installed, I cannot boot up the system (as
described) above. Please let me know if I can provide more info.
