I booted the computer to KDE Live CD 11.4 RC6.
uname reports kernel as 2.6.37-20-desktop.
Results:
Same problem as originally reported.
A 2GB SD card loads OK using both an internal (USB connected) card reader and
the external Kingston card reader.
A 16GB SD card fails to load via either interface.
I note that when inserting into the internal reader, the "card inserted" LED
flashes for perhaps 60 seconds, then turns solid (but card not mounted).
This LED flashes perhaps 1-2 seconds when the 2GB card is inserted, then turns
solid and the Device Notifier pops up on the desktop
