So are there two separate problems here?
1) GNOME can't umount USB disk but you can umount it manually
2) /windows/C is causing the Oops messages during shutdown.
Note that this Oops isn't at all the same as the kernel message indicating that
it has crashed. This is output by the /etc/init.d/boot.localfs script. If it
can't umount, it tries to remount read-only, and syncs a few times for good
measure.
