I am not convinced that the hard lockups you are seeing are a Kernel problem.
It might be but without more information I can't tell.
The temporary freezing might be caused by the way an application is using
certain Kernel features. There really isn't an easy fix. You can try
data=writeback for your filesystem but that can introduce slight security and
data integrity problems in case of a system crash.
Can you setup a serial console or netconsole to capture Kernel output during
the lockup?
Perhaps easiest would be testing openSUSE 11.4.
