Hmm, seems the sleep is necessary to allow fontend and backend to rendezvous. 
Others have tried the vif-bridge approach:

Someone else took the approach of adding a MTU option to domU vif config, but
the patch never went anywhere:

IMO, the latter approach would be preferable but I'm not sure if
netback/netfront fully support this.  I see that they both have impls for
ndo_change_mtu.

Olaf, do you have any opinions on various approaches to solving this issue?
