https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=658588 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=658588#c0 Summary: Installing on a mdRAID 1 with SATA controller in AHCI mode gives GRUB Error 21 on reboot Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@novell.com ReportedBy: jpeirce@sourcecode.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US) AppleWebKit/534.10 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/8.0.552.215 Safari/534.10 After installing OpenSUSE 11.3 onto two 500GB WD SATA drives setup in a software RAID1 with the BIOS set to AHCI mode, after the initial reboot, the system refuses to load GRUB, giving Error 21. The first reboot after the installation works fine if you choose to identify the disks by-name, but fails if you identify disks by-id. I believe the installer skips GRUB on the first reboot though. Every subsequent reboot will fail with Error 21, not even getting into the GRUB menu. Attempts to repair the bootloader do not work either. I tried using yast2 via the 11.3 DVD in rescue mode in a chroot first, and that did not work. I then tried using the grub prompt, root (hd0,0), setup(hd0), then the same for hd1. Grub reported it installed successfully but booting failed again. Then I tried using grub-install.unsupported, again it said it installed successfully, but booting failed. I then booted to rescue mode on a RHEL DVD, and tried grub-install and using the grub prompt to install GRUB, again everything reports success but the machine failed to boot. As a last ditch effort I set the BIOS SATA option back to it's default IDE mode and the system came up without issue! The motherboard is a SuperMicro X8DTG using the latest BIOS from SM. I work for a OEM and this system will be shipping out tomorrow and heading to quality control tonight, so if you need any additional information please request it immediately. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Set BIOS to AHCI mode 2. Install OpenSUSE 11.3 on a mdRAID1 with a seperate boot partition 3. Reboot the system after installation is finished Actual Results: GRUB Loading Stage 1.5... GRUB Error 21 Expected Results: Boot into OpenSUSE -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
