This problem is still present in openSUSE 11.3. Moreover, it's still present in
linux-2.6.37-rc2.
Judging it by my ear I can say that varying the volume between 0% and 50% DOES
NOT affect the sound volume at all. 0% is exactly as loud as 50%, not silent.
The volume control between 50% and 100% provides a good user experience, but
below 50% simply nothing happens.
Examining with alsamixer I observed that dB gain at 0% is told to be -91,50 At
49% it's told to be -45 and at 100% it's told to be 3.
