I would like to leave just a couple of thoughts:
1. How important is a user contribution? - Someone spended some time looking
around for a name, a sub-domain, organized a project and got it on track.
Wouldn't be fair to question if such behavior might bring motivation problems?
We should encourage and support contributions.
2. We do have a marketing team. Things like this are interesting, but it
depends on one thing:
1. If do it from/to the community; I don't believe the community is so narrow
minded to be affected by it, nevertheless, we could work it marketing wise and
try to shift the polarity of the message from possible negative to positive. Of
course it's easier to kill it.
2. There are commercial interests behind and in this case needs to be something
more corporate. In that case (outside the community scope) it might become
offensive. So you do have quite a point. But if this is the really, I really
turn my back to such villainy.
3. We can shift the polarity of the message from negative to positive and still
work it out a success. RTFM does provide at some point a "hook" to a wider
audience. With a polarity shift we might even promote self-learning.
4. Either way, if it doesn't get squashed (rtfm.o.o), I would even challenge
you to find some metrics and check out which one works best.
I would also like to point one thing which has been neglect on the discussion
so far, the target in most will be an international audience, therefore, RTFM
in some cases will actually be redundant, while in other appears to be
offensive (without image work of course).
If RTFM brings more contributions, I will strongly support it, and make myself
available to work it's image following the original contributors wishes and
turn it into something fun and interesting to the community. It's a risk, but
everything in life involves risks. If someone already brought it this far, I
would support it and say it's worth the risk.
