Does this mean you you also cannot open the KDE menu afterwards?
Can you still open krunner via 'Alt+F2'? If no, does switching to a virtual
terminal via 'Ctrl+Alt+F1' work? Is there anything special in .xsession-errors?

Or another try:
Does the shortcut 'Ctrl+Alt+Del' bring up a shutdown dialog in a working KDE
session?
