The vga=... parameter is used to set up the video mode for the VBIOS which
starts before KMS comes up and - if KMS doesn't start for whatever reason -
remains. The parameter is set to a value that hwinfo obtains from EDID AFAIK.
The parameter is used so that vesafb starts *at all* and sets a meaningful
value.
KMS itself is able to query EDID. If the EDID table lies the vga=... parameter
will be just as wrong as what KMS will select.
Hence vga=... is needed to get a graphics mode at all since the vesafb is
unable to query edid itself while any option for a video mode would
artificially lock down a video mode. If KMS isn't able to read EDID it will
pick a sensible default. Also monitors' EDID data has become far more reliable
today as <MainStream> OS heavily depends on it.
On the console it's possible to select a bigger font - within limits of course.
Anyone who feels like it therefore could provide a little script which obtains
the screen resolution from EDID data and loads a font of a size that brings
resolution as close to the standard value of 96 dpi as possible.
I assume that it would require quite some cycles until this is stable so that
the amount of complaints by the users becomes as low as it is now.
Please feel free to pick up this topic :)
