On the following posts I'll add more information in regard to this problem.
After switching on the laptop and with iwlist wlan0 scan returning no results I
ran the following commands (notice that iwlist returns interface down after
running ifup but it was returning no scan results before):
zeus:/ # ifup wlan0
Network interface is managed by the NetworkManager -> skipping
zeus:/ # iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down
zeus:/ # rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no
zeus:/ # rfkill unblock all
zeus:/ # rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
zeus:/ # iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down
