Hm, I have this working here without any problem. Please attach your
/etc/imapd.conf and /etc/sysconfig/saslauthd.
It seems your client is not even trying to use the "LOGIN" mechanism (that's
IMAP's authentication mechanism for plaintext authentication) it tries to use
the SASL mechanism "CRAM-MD5". To avoid that you can either:
1. Tell the client to use "LOGIN" instead of SASL. (Most clients have an option
somewhere to configure that)
2. Remove the respective SASL plugin packages from your server (e.g.
cyrus-sasl-crammd5)
3. Configure imapd to only announce the SASL mechs you really have working (by
adding "sasl_mech_list: plain login" to imapd.conf
The reason that it worked for you with 11.2 might e.g. have be that you didn't
have the cyrus-sasl plugins installed. That would have caused the client and
the server to negotiate LOGIN instead of any SASL mechanism.
