Summary: Frequent Kernel Hardlock - Looks like built-in network
module problem
Classification: openSUSE
Product: openSUSE 11.3
Version: Final
Platform: i686
OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3
Status: NEW
Severity: Critical
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Kernel
AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com
ReportedBy: drankinatty@suddenlinkmail.com
QAContact: qa@suse.de
Found By: ---
Blocker: ---
11.3 hardlocks my box every 5-10 minutes. At first I thought it was gtk related
because the hardlocks seemed to relate to firefox, thunderbird, or yast
sw_mgmt, but then I began experiencing hardlocks when no gtk apps were
involved.
Going back over the log history, looking at the last 15 messages before each
hardlock, it looks like it is related to either eth0 or wlan0 activity. I have
used this box with every release since 10.2 and never had this problem while
using the madwifi external modules. I also did not have this problem with 11.2,
but with 11.3 I can't get 5h1t done without the box locking up.
Here are the last 15 messages prior to each lockup (the grep '--' separator
shows the breaks in the log [as well as the time]):

In each case you have either eth0, or wlan0 activity immediately prior to the
lockup. My suspicion is that the new built-in kernel modules for networking are
choking and locking the system.
Now, the box is still alive when the lock occurs. I discovered this while
booting to runlevel 3 and using yast ncurses. When the hardlock occurred, I was
still able to 'alt+left/right' to switch tty's, but the yast process was locked
taking 100% of the cpu and had to be manually killed with 'kill $PID'.
When this happens on vt7, you are just screwed because you cannot
ctrl+alt+F(1-6) so the box is effectively hardlocked if this happens in gnome
or kde.
You will have to tell me what else you need. I don't know what you will want to
see for this type of problem.
The laptop is a Toshiba P35A/P4 3.33GHz w 2G of RAM. RAM is 100% OK. memtest86+
confirmed and 11.2 and Arch Linux run like a champ on it (as did suse 10.2 -
opensuse 11.2).
