I found a way to disable pcmcia, by moving the pcmcia_core.ko module to
pcmcia_core.ko.disable (pretty brutal and requires booting a rescue kernel).
This at least stops the system from crashing, and only renders my pcmcia card
(and the SD card reader) useless.
Correction: The last line to be seen actually is
[<time>] pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket0: cs: memory probe
0x100000000-0xfcffffffff:
(one zero less)
If time permits, I'll try to do some more debugging - the questionable routine
is do_mem_probe in /usr/src/linux/drivers/pcmcia/rsrc_nonstatic.c (not for
today).
