If you want to keep system running after failure, you should waste your money
on System Z ;-) The main purpose of RAID is to keep the data in case of disk
failure.
Anyway, you are right that it should work if you configure GRUB properly. Could
you, please, attach the logs (/var/log/YaST2) and GRUB configuration files
(/etc/grun.conf, /boot/grub/menu.lst, /boot/grub/device.map)?
