As I wrote above, there is no crash involved here, the X server and all X
applications are still running, I just cannot switch to it, ie. switching to
VT7 on which X is supposed to be running shows me only a text console. And
weird enough the X mouse cursor is visible on all VTs that I switch to. 

I also don't have a /var/log/xdm.errors logfile, what application is supposed
to log what into it?
