Thanks for the reply.
It failed during (runlevel 3 and <ESC> during during Splash image) boot. That
was coming to the first tty1 Login at the bottom. And it would be found in
/var/log. "postmaster -D" was not found doing "ps ax | grep postmaster"
rpm -q postgresql-server was attempted but as usual I removed any old openSuSE
things (rpm -e postgresql-server) All I can say is that the binaries failed to
work. All I did was compile a PostgreSQL 8.4.4 version and the three days of
fighting went away. It is working correctly. It may have come from a bad DVD
download but Yast2 CHECK SOURCE DVD stated that the DVD was good.
As for /etc/init.d/postgres again it was wrong and correcting it worked.
I did make a backup of /etc/init.d/postgres and used it on the new version
after rpm -e.
I did a fresh install or maybe it was from a zypper dup or up. I guess that
something in a script did remove a old file set. However, I absolutely
remember formatting "/" (/dev/sda7).
