If I run ls in gnome-terminal quite often the terminal is not redrawn *BUT* if
I enable the fix screen updates in XGL with fglrx on my INTEL G945 card it
suddenly starts to work (just the 1 minute testing).

This is really strange IMO.

I'm not considering this fixed until the new packages are actually in
openSUSE:Factory thus reopening.

Updated compiz-manager was checked-in to Factory on May 28:

The problem you might see is that the logic tries to detect if you have a
config (it does not find out if broken or not). If no config exists, it creates
a new one (hopefully working). If a config exists, it is being used.

can you try deleting / renaming
"$HOME/.config/compiz/compizconfig-1/Default.ini" and see if the new result is
more useful?

It's also possible that the default plugins need further tweaking (the default
plugin handling is completely different as it used to be in 11.2, as we had
compiz 0.7.8 then, now we're on 0.8.6)
