It now seems that this submission was entirely misguided so I apologise again
for any time wasted. The PC's which caused problems during the installation of
openSUSE 11.2 had been memory expanded with what appears to be a faulty (newer)
batch of Corsair Value Select PC3200 memory. Apparently, revision number
64M8BDBG seems to have caused problems elsewhere e.g.
http://forum.corsair.com/forums/showthread.php?p=287614).
During recent re-testing, I noticed that the 64M8BDBG batch of memory drags
the overall Memclock speed value down from the usual 200MHz to 163MHz or DDR327
(according to Memtest86+ v4.00) when the BIOS Memclock value is set to AUTO.
When the BIOS Memclock value is explicitly set to 200MHz, test machines just
lock up shortly after booting. Strangely, multiple-pass Memtest86+ testing has
never reported any actual errors.
I still haven't worked out how "faulty" memory allowed successful installation
of openSUSE 11.2 using non-automatic configuration and yet did not with
automatic configuration (e.g. have I overlooked something else as well?) but
the bottom line is: With the 64M8BDBG batch of memory removed, there appear to
be no problems installing openSUSE 11.2 in either configuration mode, AUTO or
MANUAL.
I therefore request that you simply delete or ignore this bug submission
entirely.
