Hello,
I have this same issue too. We have several vanilla OpenSuse 11.1 machines
that all have the same problem when logging into Gnome. The machines are
shared by several people. The accounts are managed via NIS and home
directories mounted via NFS. (Server is running 11.1 also)
Often when folks try to login they get the "Could not create ICE listening
sockets" message, followed by "Cannot establish any listening sockets" and
then,
"ICEListenForConnection did not return a local listing..." etc... The user
then appears to be hung - All they see is the desktop wallpaper. No menus or
icons; nothing to click on, or anyway to get out or restart. Actually
restarting X with CRTL+ALT+Backspace and trying to login again is the 100%
success workaround.
I've tried moving from auto-mounting (autofs) the home directories to using the
fstab and mounting all NFS directories at boot time, but that didn't have any
effect on the problem. I've also tried logging into the account in a separate
VT console first (CTRL+ALT+F2) and then going back to X and logging in there
(CRTL+ALT+F7), but that doesn't change the outcome at all - Still get the
error.
I don't know what else to try... Doesn't sound like moving the home
directories to the local disk would fix anything. I'm using GDM. Perhaps try
using KDM?
No WiFi at all - We have a mix of Cat6 10/100/1000, some machines with 100Mbit
cards, some with 1000Mbit cards. Our Switch supports both modes and does NOT
default down to the slowest speed. It's not a bandwidth issue for sure.
Kind regards,
Iestyn Guest.
