One thing that might be useful.

With the tg3, I was getting a fair number of frame errors.

All hardware offloading is turned off in both the sender and receive, MTU is
1500, etc....

          RX packets:108084 errors:422 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:431


Trying a completely different machine, a laptop with built-in Intel GiG-E
(although the non-jumbo-frame version), same bad performance (however, no frame
errors).

I suppose it could be the switch, but again, non-NFS traffic just *flies*.
