Indeed. 2048x1152 appears to be the latest fancy 16:9 resolution on the market.
You could switch to xdm by editing
/etc/sysconfig/displaymanager:DISPLAYMANAGER.
KWIN desktop effects are the 3D desktop effects of KDE4. It might be enabled by
default. Sorry, I'm not an KDE expert. startx: Indeed this looks severely
broken.
X: symbol lookup error: X: undefined symbol: pixman_transform_init_identity
Can you start the Xserver at all? Please run 'X -logverbose 7', kill it after a
few seconds with Ctrl-Alt-BS (twice!) and attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
