I have the same problem with 2 different computers: an older 32-bit system and
my actual 64-bit system,

I decided to do a fresh installation on the 32-bit machine (an upgrade from
11.1 did not work, because it failed to install grub).
I started the retail DVD and after the error 11 message (as above) I pressed
return twice and continued with the ascii bootloader screen as described in the
original report.
Graphical installation continued without problems. 

Installed system boots, but I have no splash screen during boot.
The first ascii message at boot is something like "Address allocation conflict
for device ...", which gets overwritten so quickly by the next messages that I
can't read it exactly.
