This could indeed be a race with the hal daemon. Though that should have been
fixed meanwhile.

Please add a

   sleep 10

just after the "   start)" line in /etc/init.d/xdm. The Xserver will startup 10
seconds later than usual, so don't reset too early if nothing happens ;-)


I doubt that this will "fix" this issue, but it's worth a try. And will help
nail down the bug.
