See
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Configuring_Scanners_from_SUSE_LINUX_9.2
"Trouble-Shooting (Debugging)"
how to provide debug-messages regarding scanning.

When scanning with HPLIP's driver "hpaio" you may get
HPLIP's error messages only in /var/log/messages
but I need the other debug-message of SANE too.

Regarding USB I/O errors:

Usually this indicates an unstable USB communication
with the device, see
"USB Cable Connection and Additional USB Hubs" at
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Configuring_Scanners_from_SUSE_LINUX_9.2

Furthermore you may use kernel USB modules for fast USB 2.x
data transfer but actually your hardware (the computer,
the USB cables and/or hubs, the HP device) may not work
reliably at this speed so that you may have to unload
the USB 2.x speed kernel modules and use only kernel modules
for the slower USB 1.x speed - at least as a test to verify
if USB speed is the reason here.
