I have without exception experienced this when installing openSUSE 11.2, 11.1
and another old version I don't remember. These were all DVD images (x86_64).
The reason why I don't remember is that I never got to use the system because
it was such a showstopper before I learnt to tackle it, and I'm not a noob.
After finishing the installation, including creating 1 user other than root,
the user does not exist in the Users section of YaST2, nor in /etc/passwd. In
addition, the home directory of this single user has UID and GID set to root.
During installation, I always go for manual partitioning, in order to not erase
the one and only extremely important partition, for which I set the mountpoint
/home/user/ark. The cause for the bug may be unclear, but this is what I do on
all my 3 computers, and I can tell you that the setup works on all major
distros except openSUSE.
