I know this bug is closed, but I need a workaround for some performance
testing. I am running VMware Workstation 6.5.3 on an x86_64 openSUSE 11.2 RC1
system. I get this warning when I boot the install DVD on a guest VM:
The host high-resolution timer device (/dev/rtc) is not available (Permission
denied). Without this device, the guest operating system can fail to keep time
correctly. For more information, see http://vmware.com/info?id=34.
So ... I try this:
AlgoCompSynth:~ # ls -la /dev/rtc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Oct 27 13:46 /dev/rtc -> rtc0
AlgoCompSynth:~ # ls -la /dev/rtc0
crw-rw---- 1 root root 254, 0 Oct 27 13:46 /dev/rtc0
AlgoCompSynth:~ # chmod o+r /dev/rtc0
AlgoCompSynth:~ # ls -la /dev/rtc0
crw-rw-r-- 1 root root 254, 0 Oct 27 13:46 /dev/rtc0
and still get the warning. But try this:
AlgoCompSynth:~ # chmod o+rw /dev/rtc0
AlgoCompSynth:~ # ls -la /dev/rtc0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 254, 0 Oct 27 13:46 /dev/rtc0
and the warning goes away!
