Andre,
By enabling desktop effects you're switching the Window Manager from Metacity
to Compiz.
If you want to re-use the metacity keyboard bindings, the best way to achieve
this is by installing the package libcompizconfig-backend-gconf
and then in ccsm / preferences select GConf as the configuration backend.
does this solve your issue?
(why it stopped: any idea if the gconf backend was ever pulled in
automatically? I have it on my systems but would not remember having them ever
installed manually).
