I tried to simulate the fresh install state with rm -rf ~/.kde* to see what's
happening after the first login. nepomuk is still going wild and does a lot of
indexing. I thought this should have ceased?

Look at the size of the .kde4 folder just after login, it's huge

du -sh .kde4
11M     .kde4

Please stop nepomuk from doing this.
