I have created a trial user with an empty single desktop and no activities or
panels and the only widget the application launcher "New style" and the cashew
in the upper right hand screen corner.

I have opened an xterm window and started:

  while :;do date;ps aux|grep "plasma-desktop --nocrashhandler";sleep 5m;done

first readings for %CPU usage were 3.2, 3.0 and 2.8

Regular user is seeing %8.4 which has been slowly decreasing from 10.3 since
21:04:45 EDT 15 Sept 09

will advise further readings

note: will do system reboot for new kernel just installed, soon.
