Re the KDE sound error messages I mentioned previously in Comment #12 
When logging in initially I am unable to capture the error message.
When logging in to a second account, while still logged into the first account,
I am able to capture the following KDE message: 

KDE detected that one or more internal sound devices were removed.
Do you want KDE to permanently forget about these devices?
This is the list of devices KDE thinks can be removed:
Output: Intel ICH6 with STAC9750,51 (Intel ICH6 - IEC958)
Output: Intel ICH6, Intel ICH6 - IEC958 (IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output)

The following tests work fine in both accounts:
speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav
aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/KDE_Startup_new.wav
