I do have the same problem. Let me note that SuSE 11.1 has been running without
that problem for months in my laptop. It is updated to the latest maintenance
release.

I think that I can add some tips. During boot the system creates two additional
files /etc/mtab~ and /etc/mtab~2245 (the number changes). If these files are
present during shutdown the problems mentioned in the original post appear. On
the contrary if I erase those files by myself the shutdown is completly normal.
