Disabling pulseaudio as described did not help (pulseaudio still running after
reboot, sound muted again).
cd /usr/bin && mv pulseaudio pulseaudio_AWAY helped ;-)
I just verified that it is really caused by pulseaudio by running it manually
in a konsole window. The sound was muted instantly, and I got this on stdout:
W: main.c: High-priority scheduling enabled in configuration but not
allowed by policy.
