Puzzling....
To compare file sizes I ran
$ ls -la /boot
and then noticed that the initrd and and vmlinuz were linked to the 'default'
kernel even though I was using 'trace' at the time
I correctly linked these and then re-ran mkinitrd - I got the same results as I
reported previously - file sizes did vary a little.
So before rebooting I thought to run mkinitrd explicitly giving the initrd and
kernel version details. I thought one initrd would be attempt to be built....
surprise!?
$ mkinitrd -v /boot/initrd-2.6.27.23-0.1-trace 2.6.27.23-0.1-trace

This is suspiciously similar to an error message I see at the top of
/var/log/boot.msg and is also reported by others here:

Not sure where to next?
