Summary: Samba new default passdb backend with openSUSE 11.2
Classification: openSUSE
Product: openSUSE 11.2
Version: Factory
Platform: All
OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1
Status: NEW
Severity: Enhancement
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Release Notes
AssignedTo: ke@xxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: lmuelle@xxxxxxxxxx
QAContact: coolo@xxxxxxxxxx
Found By: ---
Samba packages till openSUSE 11.1 and SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE) 11 used
smbpasswd as default 'passdb backend'.
This default was inherited from the Samba source code and not explicitly set in
the packaged /etc/samba/smb.conf (smb.conf for short) configuration file.
With this new SUSE version this changes in two directions:
a) The new default value inherited from the code is tdbsam.
b) The new default value is also set in the default smb.conf
As soon as you modified smb.conf the update process will install
smb.conf.rpmnew and keep your old configuration.
Please check your old configuration if no 'passdb backend' was set. In this
case you have two opportinities to get it running again:
a) Convert smbpasswd to tdbsam (suggested approach)
Call as user root:
pdbedit -i smbpasswd:/etc/samba/smbpasswd -e tdbsam:/etc/samba/passdb.tdb
And ensure the global section of smb.conf has a line with
passdb backend = tdbsam
b) Set 'passdb backend = smbpasswd'
We strongly recommend to use the new default 'tdbsam'. Only follow the old
approach if you have good reasons. Please consider to file a bug report as
suggested at http://en.openSUSE.org/Samba in the 'Samba bug reporting and
advanced debugging information'.
Setting 'passdb backend = smbpasswd' allows you to stay with the old
configuration.
Please keep in mind: This old approach provides a much smaller feature set than
the new default passdb backend tdbsam.
