Neither Firefox (which was opened while the sound still works) nor Amarok nor VLC are able to produce sound. Executing `/etc/init.d/alsasound restart` makes the sound work again. I've attached the segment of my /var/log/messages between restarting alsa and noticing that the sound had died.
