Summary: Fresh Install chooses EXA for Intel GMA 4500M, UXA
works better
Classification: openSUSE
Product: openSUSE 11.2
Version: Milestone 1
Platform: x86-64
OS/Version: Other
Status: NEW
Severity: Minor
Priority: P5 - None
Component: SaX2
AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: benvanderjagt@xxxxxxxxx
QAContact: sax2-maintainer-bugs@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Found By: ---
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.8)
Gecko/2009032600 SUSE/3.0.8-1.3 Firefox/3.0.8
First boot after installing openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 1 leaves an almost
unresponsive system during X setup. The power button successfully shuts down,
but no keyboard input does anything. After rebooting, I chose runlevel 3 in
GrUB and added the following line to the Device section of xorg.conf:
Option "AccelMethod" "UXA"
I also remarked out a line that looked specific to EXA. Saving the file and
switching to runlevel 5 resulted in a completely functional desktop.
(Additionally, I would like to point out that using 'glxgears' or 'maniadrive'
as a crude benchmark shows about a 25% boost in performance above Fedora 10,
which in turn is about 9% faster than openSUSE 11.1, which has always had a
hardlock problem with this video controller. Also, the GMA 950, which seems to
work perfectly fine after a fresh install, shows a similar 25% performance
boost. Kudos to the GEM developers and to openSUSE for getting it to work in
11.2!)
My hardware is an Acer Aspire 4330, using an Intel 4500M video controller.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Install openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 1
2.Allow installer to start detecting X configuration
3.Use power button to shut down the system after X has left you with a blank
screen
Actual Results:
Computer becomes unresponsive after each boot into X, and the X.org config
seems to suggest that EXA acceleration architecture is used by default.
Expected Results:
UXA works right with GEM, so it would be better to use the AccelMethod UXA at
first boot if the 4500M is detected.
(Is this "Minor", because it's easy to fix? Or is it "Critical", because it
keeps the installer from finishing as normal?)
